Tourism marks recovery trends in number of hotel nights across Europe

The accommodation industry in Europe registered an increase of 2.8% in the number of hotel nights spent, beginning a recovery process after its annual declines of 0.3% and 3.7% in 2008 and 2009, respectively.

According to the Eurostat Press Office, the Baltic Countries and Malta registered the highest increase in the number of hotel nights spent, of over 10% in each of them. On the contrary, declines were recorded in Romania (-8.7%), Greece (-2.3%), Slovenia (-0.1%).

However, Spain (268 million), Italy (245 million) and Germany (229 million) led the ranking in terms of the total number of nights spent in 2010. Spain and Italy also registered the highest number of nights spent in hotels by non-residents, contributing to the 45% that this category signifies out of the total number of nights spent in hotels across the EU27, with an increase of 8.9 and 2.4% respectively compared to the previous year.
Resident tourists also came to record a growth in 2010, with largest increases in Poland (+11.8%), Latvia (+11.7%), Lithuania (+10.5%) and Belgium (+10.4%).
